Actually, the group recorded enough material for a 4-CD box (also released by Sundazed), but this single CD will serve as an excellent introduction to the Trashmen. The Trashmen【 10 songs in total 】 The Trashmen were a rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1962. This is a 1995 reissue of their first LP, with four extra tracks. It has been used in several TV shows, TV ads and movies, most notably in Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" (1987): ĬD : "Surfin' Bird (Sundazed SC 6064). "Surfin' Bird" has been covered by several artists, including the Cramps, the Ramones, the Beach Boys and Pee-Wee Herman. During the second half of this month they will be touring Italy. Since then they have been gigging on and off, with Tony's brother Mark Andreason on drums as a replacement for Wahrer. They reformed in the mid-1970s and continued to play locally until Steve Wahrer died of throat cancer on Janu(aged 47). Though the group continued to release good singles, their moment in the sun had come and gone and by late 1967, the Trashmen disbanded. It was a nice mix of surf instrumentals (including good versions of "Miserlou" and "Malaguena") and vocals (like Barrett Strong's "Money", Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" and Jimmy Dee's "Henrietta"). A "Surfin' Bird" LP had already been issued in February 1964 and reached # 48 on the album charts. The follow-up to "Surfin' Bird" was "Bird Dance Beat" (Garrett 4003), which was a little too-close-for-comfort to their big hit, but still managed to reach # 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. The next year was not much different and took them as far as Venezuela. Andreason reckons the group travelled 140,000 miles that year. Reportedly, the Trashmen played 289 one-night stands around the USA in 1964. "Surfin' Bird" is now credited to Al Frazier, "Rocky" Wilson, Carl White and Sonny Harris, the four members of the Rivingtons. The Rivingtons, who collectively wrote both "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word", succesfully sued the Trashmen and their record label for plagiarism. Because of "Surfin' Bird", they are usually remembered as a novelty act, but the Trashmen were actually a competent rock 'n' roll band, who played mostly surf music. They evolved from Jim Thaxter and the Travelers, who recorded one single under that name ("Sally Jo"/ "Cyclone", Ariel 73060) in 1960. The Trashmen were a quartet from Minneapolis, Minnesota : Tony Andreason (lead guitar), Dal Winslow (guitar, vocals), Bob Reed (bass guitar) and Steve Wahrer (lead singer, drums). Released on the small Garrett label in the autumn of 1963, "Surfin' Bird" reached its peak position (# 4) in the week of Febru(the week that the Beatles reached the # 1 position on the Billboard charts for the first time, with "I Want To Hold Your Hand"). I have seen the word "regurgitating" somewhere on the web for this vocal tour de force, perhaps that describes it best. About halfway, where you might expect an instrumental solo, there is a vocal interjection which has to be heard to be believed. The lyrics consist for the most part of the titles of the two hits by the Rivingtons, "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word", endlessly repeated with manic energy by lead singer / drummer Steve Wahrer. One of the weirdest US Top 10 hits ever is "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen.

It was under Spanish rule, but by 1899, the island was part of the United States just ten years later. Headquartered in San Juan, the Puerto Rico Police Department has been a part of the island’s history since 1889. The Mayor of Carolina announced to residents that the city would be undertaking a monument in honor of the three officers. He stated that Batiz is the primary suspect in Isadora Marie Nieves Cruz’s killing, also known as ‘Pinky Curvy.’ They were members of a violent drug trafficking organization called the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cantera or FARC. Police Commissioner Antonio López gave some details about the shooter to the media. The shooter, Batiz, is suspected of committing several murders in the area. Batiz then aimed his vehicle at Agent Hernández-Cartagena and, using it as a weapon, struck the officer, killing him. This is when he again opened fire, killing Agent Luis Marrero-Díaz. As he got close to the airport exit, he came to a stop. The shooter, now known to be David Rivera Batiz, sped off towards the airport. Two Puerto Rico Police officers, including Cartagena, pursued the shooter after he carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene. He used a modified AK-47 to shoot and kill Agent Salamán-Conde. Officers answered the call, not knowing that a dangerous criminal was part of the accident scene.Īs Agent Salamán-Conde arrived to provide help, a man involved in the accident began shooting without warning. Police were called to the scene to assist and help anyone injured. The tragic violence began when David Rivera Batiz, a known gang member, was involved in a motor vehicle accident. The violent shooter had just killed a fellow law enforcement officer, Agent Luis Salamán-Conde, who worked with the Carolina Municipal Police Department. Agent Eliezer Hernández-Cartagena was killed when he was assaulted with a vehicle during an attempt to arrest a murder suspect.Īgent Eliezer Hernández-Cartagena and Agent Luis Marrero-Díaz of the Puerto Rico Police Department died trying to capture the gunman. A violent confrontation between a known gang member and police resulted in the deaths of three beloved officers. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. One such example could be the engagement of people in the production of artwork using the so-called maker spaces as a place of work and thereby also introducing “audiences” to new digital technologies and skill sets. In contrast to more traditional forms of art, socially engaged artists often work closely with their audiences in one way or other.įor example, by gaining in-depth knowledge of particular challenges in specific communities and creating awareness about such issues through the artwork or by directly engaging people in the production of art. In this context, the “socially engaged arts” (Bishop, 2012) is of particular interest. Exploring the role of the arts across both business and society, one part of the project has a particular focus on marginalized groups of people who today do not reap the acclaimed benefits of the digital transformation (e.g. Gangadharan and Niklas, 2019 Gebru, 2018 Neves, Franz, Munteanu and Baecker, 2018 Park and Humphry, 2019). For example, with the project SOMEONE (2019), Lauren McCarthy tries to address the advances in human-machine relationships represented in ‘smart houses’ and try to give back a human identity to artificial intelligent devices through active human participation.Īs part of the H2020 research project Artsformation, we explore the current and potential role of the arts in the digital transformation. Therefore, it is perhaps no surprise that the social, environmental and economic consequences of the digital transformation are now also increasingly addressed by artists. Throughout history, the arts have always reflected major transitions as they unfold. Another area in which technology is having an enormous impact is in our ways of communication and being together, for example through technologies like Zoom or Facetime. Or the increasing collection and analysis of personal data in the use of any social media. This includes for example the impact of new technologies on processes of democratisation, like the role of Facebook in the UK referendum in 2016. Today, digitalisation changes the way things are done across business and society alike. Two decades into the new millennium it is almost impossible to imagine a future in which digital technologies do not play a key role. Related: iPhone 13 review: another stellar Apple smartphone But why, Apple, why make your phones look so boring and same-same every year? Why not bring back the rose gold of the iPhone 6s era? Why not try something more fun for a change? Maybe the tail end of 2022 with the next iPhone release will carry a nice colour surprise - but you might not want to count on it. Maybe they’re not bothering to think outside the box and try something fun (we’re thinking hot pink like the OG Motorola Razr), because they expect people to invest more time into choosing a case than a phone colour. They’ve made some fun and interesting choices for colours in the past - and this is a company that made a name for itself with colourful iPods and computers back in the day - but this latest launch makes it seem like Apple has hit a wall. Indeed, 2021 seemed to be the year of purple, with several companies choosing the colourway for devices released during the year.įor any Apple fans who have found themselves bored of the same colour choices year after year (even if you plan on using a case or cover for your phone), this new release might not bode well for the future. However, the purple version of the iPhone 12 and 12 mini was a refreshing break from a seemingly repetitive cycle of colours. Green in some shape or form, whether it’s a deep green or a mint green, has been a popular colour choice for Apple to use for phones in the past few years. Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, Bob Borchers, said: “People love the design of iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13, and we’re excited to unveil the stunning new alpine green and green finishes, which join the wide range of beautiful colours on the iPhone 13 line-up.” iPhone 13 series on left, iPhone 11 Pro on rightĪpple, however, seems to be stoked with the new colours. If you’re wondering what the difference is between ‘Midnight’ and ‘Alpine’ green, the new colours for the iPhone 13 seem to be a slightly warmer version of deep Midnight Green. If these shades look familiar, you might be thinking back to the 2019 iPhone 11 series, where the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max were offered in a ‘Midnight Green’ colourway. Unfortunately, these are not the most imaginative colour choices. In a move that might make you think “why?”, Apple has unveiled ‘Alpine Green’ and ‘Green’ hues for the iPhone 13 Pro (and 13 Pro Max) and iPhone 13 (and 13 mini) respectively. This year, Apple has come up with a totally new, unique and never-before-seen iPhone colour. Several months after the iPhone 12 series debuted in 2021, Apple sprung a gorgeous purple colourway for the iPhone 12 and 12 mini on us, and it was beautiful. For some reason, Apple likes to add new colours to the latest iPhone releases a while after the initial phone release. If you put larger and heavier eyepiece, the scope might lose balance, but my recommendation is to remove the viewfinder and use the lightweight red dot that’s better for pointing the scope and fixes the large eyepiece issue. I was surprised that the focuser wasn’t dual speed for fine-tuning. Telescopes with collapsible tubes are really nice for portability unfortunately, the rocker base is not designed to be disassembled into smaller pieces. The performance should be enough for most of the Messier catalog and similar deep sky objects. Sky Watcher 8” Dobsonian wide aperture and its long focal length can sometimes be excellent for every backyard astronomer. With a database of more than 40,000 stars, galaxies, nebulae, clusters, and planets, the family was set for years of viewing. We viewed Saturn’s rings, the Moon’s craters, and Jupiter’s cloud bands. The scope has a 5.1” optical reflecting telescope lens and a focal length of 650mm. Point the scope to any three bright celestial objects in the sky, and we were set to go. On this Celestron reflector, we used the SkyAlign function to simply input the date, time, and location into the hand control. It is so much easier, faster, and fun to use. Because of its 12” aperture, for observing the Moon and Moon’s crater, you’ll need an ND-16 filter or a variable ND filter that is an even better choice.Īs a first experience using a computerized reflector telescope with an Altazimuth GoTo Mount, we were blown away. The viewfinder is great, but a red dot sight is highly recommended for the Dobsonians. In order to experience the full potential of this 12-inch scope, maybe you should buy at least one high-end eyepiece with an ultra-wide apparent field of view at 100°. One UHC filter for a start will help a lot, not just for light pollution, but for more contrast as well. Its larger aperture and longer focal length can utilize the best eyepieces out there. The same two eyepieces are coming with this scope as well, so please buy at least the cheap aspherical eyepieces.įor backyard astronomy, its bulky rocker base won’t be an issue, but if you ask me, I would drag any kind of 12” to everywhere. This one has a larger aperture, longer focal length, a lot better dual-speed focuser, and almost the same weight, which is a good thing for portability. The Sky Watcher Flextube 300 12-inch scope is almost the same quality as the 8-inch Sky-Watcher version. The suspension stiffens a bit when you push on the pedals, but most riders soon love this and use it to great effect. A slight spring-loading effect occurs and then releases every time you pump the pedals on bumpy terrain. On the contrary, after the initial ‘getting used to it’ period, you’ll be using the effects of the chain growth, slight shock extension and shifting crankset to kick your way out of slow-down corners as soon as the roughest ground is out of the way. The surprise is that you rarely notice the downhill heft on flat trails, partly because the rear suspension doesn’t suck pedal power away. At 40lb (that’s 7lb more than the Marin, 6lb more than the Specialized and 4lb more than the Mythic), it’s a burden on climbs, although the gearing means nothing is out of the question if you work at it. It eats terrain like a downhill bike, and carries the associated heft. This bike is certainly at the downhill end of the all-mountain scale. Still, it’s a decent downhill-worthy fork at this price.Īs soon as you climb aboard the Ruckus you know it’s going to offer you a totally different ride experience to bikes like the Marin Rock Springs or Mythic Wraith.
